Serenity, tranquillity, and peace. These are the words that come to mind when I look at this photo and I think back to the scene in the “Sounds” of New Zealand’s South Island. The quiet and stillness of the early morning scene was just asking to be photographed and although the scene was amazing in colour I think that the black-and-white development allows one to appreciate the softly graded shades from pure black to pure white in the far distance. A grey and sombre cloud hanging above opened up a letterbox from where the land began up to the tips of the mountains and lends itself particularly well to a panoramic layout with strong horizontals created from the layers of hills in the scene.

I personally have this piece in my study above my desk. At just under 1.5 m long it stands out particularly well against an off white painted wall behind it and therefore doesn’t need any frame or mounting. My personal preference for this piece therefore is a matt acrylic which with its clean lines and non-glossy texture allows you to lose yourself completely in the scene without distraction.
